The City of Miami’s Police Substation and Mounted Police Stable Facility is located within the city’s Lummus Park Historic District. Buildings in the District comprise one of the last remaining residential neighborhoods in downtown Miami. As part of the their ‘safe neighborhoods’ program, the city opted to introduce a police presence within the Lummus Park ‘Green’ and engaged MCHarry & Associates to design a new  substation and horse stable for their mounted police unit.

The result is a 5,500sf, heavy timber structure and outbuilding, whose architectural expression echoes the vintage buildings located within the park environment including the historic ‘Fort Dallas’, built circa 1844. The stable building has 11 horse stalls and office space with restrooms and changing areas.

The outdoor space is programmed with a K-9 training area, 40ft diameter ring for horse training, environmentally friendly pervious driveway and parking areas for police and visitors. There is also a public viewing area overlooking horse paddock, where officers train with their mounts.
