Listed on the National Register of Historic Places the Coral Gables Merrick House exists today much as it did in the 1920’s. The house stands as a tribute to South Florida’s history and the Merrick family’s legacy. George Merrick was raised in the house and is the visionary behind the creation of the City of Coral Gables with much of its architectural style tracing back to this house.
The City of Coral Gables acquired the property in 1976 and began its first restoration efforts in earnest. Over the years since, the house has suffered additional distress, and in 2015, M.C. Harry & Associates was commissioned to repair, restore and rehabilitate the Main House and the Garage Apartment.
Main components of this effort included extensive electrical, life-safety and air-conditioning upgrades, the restoration of all wood doors, windows, screens and hardware; repair, restoration of exterior finishes (stucco) and in limited areas, complete replacement of decaying wood framed walls and finishes; the entire re-roofing of the house with period Ludowici interlocking clay roof tiles and western cedar wood shakes matching the historic conditions, and the interior demolition and remodel of the Garage building - including complete re-roof - into new accessible toilets, storage and offices on the second floor.
Completed in September 2017, the property has been brought back to its 1925 appearance and will re-open to the public for tours and activities, continuing to be one of the City’s most treasured historical resources.
